Many people choose to walk the Camino because they feel something changing in them. They might be looking for answers, healing, guidance, or just a sense of peace. I have learnt that most pilgrims come or return to the Camino for one of three very human reasons: to heal a broken heart, mourn a loved one, or get through a big change in their lives. Each pilgrim has their story. These inner journeys can be just as challenging as walking a lot every day, and coaching can help a lot. Coaching sessions can help you start your pilgrimage with a clear goal, understanding, and emotional strength. They give you a chance to think about what’s inside you long before you put on your rucksack.

When you make a big change in your life, you will have questions, doubts, and things that you can’t see. Coaching helps you clearly name these problems, whether they are fear of the unknown, emotional weight, or not knowing what to do next. You can learn what hinders you, what patterns recur, what beliefs help or hurt you, and what you want from the Camino (and beyond). You are already halfway to getting over something once you know what is in your way.

Many pilgrims start their Camino journey with a heartbroken heart. I have done it too. A relationship has ended, and with it, a chapter of your life. Coaching sessions can help you steady yourself before the walk begins. These sessions can support you to rebuild self-worth and identity after loss, understand emotional patterns in past relationships, approach the Camino not as an escape but as a conscious act of healing, and transform your pain into inner strength and renewed direction. I aim that by the time you start walking, you should feel more grounded and ready to use the Camino as a space to reconnect with who you are becoming in the future. Tip: I recommend starting coaching sessions at least 3 months before the Camino, but if the time of your departure is nearer, I am also there to help you, if I can.

Mourning a close relative or friend is a deeply personal and often overwhelming process. I have also experienced similar things in 2023 after the loss of my father. Many pilgrims seek the Camino because of its rhythm, which offers time, silence, and the gentle companionship of others. Coaching provides a compassionate container where you can express feelings that are difficult to share with family, understand your needs during the grieving process, explore the meaning of loss in your life, and prepare emotionally for moments of solitude and reflection on the trail. The Camino doesn’t take your grief away, but coaching can help you walk with it more gently. Tip: Grief is a natural process, which all of us need to go through at one point in our lives. Seeking support in your grief is also normal. Coaching sessions can help you process the emotions instead of oppressing them.

Times of change, like losing a job, retiring, changing careers, or relocating to a new country, can make you feel confused, unsure, or like you’ve lost your identity. The Camino is a wonderful place to find your way again. Coaching sessions can help you see uncertainty as an opportunity, figure out what your strengths and underused resources are, look into new options without feeling rushed, and make goals for what you want in the next chapter of your life. A few sessions before your journey can help you get into a stronger mental state so you can accept change instead of being afraid of it. Tip: Coaching can help you become ready for a new phase of your life. A door has closed, and a new one has opened. You could wish to let go of certain things and obtain others. The sessions can help you get the most out of this trip and offer you the steadiness and positivity you need.

One of the greatest gifts of coaching is that it helps you identify the strengths you already have. Many pilgrims underestimate their resilience, creativity or determination. With guided exercises and reflection, coaching helps you identify your natural ways of coping, the skills and experiences from the past that can help you, the things that drive and keep you going, and your personal values that can keep you grounded on your journey. Camino needs this awareness more than ever on days that seem long, emotional, or physically hard.

Without some internal preparation, many pilgrims only begin to understand their reasons for walking once they are already deep into the journey. Coaching allows you to start with clarity, intention and emotional grounding. Together, we can explore your personal intentions or theme for your walk, a toolkit of emotional strategies, a more profound understanding of what transformation you seek and a sense of direction for life after the Camino. This doesn’t have to be rigid or painful – your journey will evolve naturally. But having an initial compass can make every step more meaningful.

Coaching is not therapy, nor is it a quick fix. It’s a guided conversation that brings awareness, perspective and practical tools for your inner journey. Whether you are healing, grieving, or searching for direction, coaching sessions offer the clarity and support that many pilgrims realise they only need after they start walking. Preparing your mind and heart is just as important as preparing your backpack. With the right support, the Camino becomes not only a trail you walk across the Iberian Peninsula but also a journey that helps you move forward in life with purpose and confidence. Your Camino is more than a physical adventure; it is an inner unfolding.

Coaching sessions can help you step into it fully prepared. Buen Camino!
